The spirit of Pop-Rock raises its pretty head again
Generally speaking I no longer inhabit a world where ‘singles’ even exist; never mind seem important they way there were in the halcyon days of my teenage years; yet this week I’ve received two in the post that deserve your attention; and neither were available on Record Store Day!
The first is a glorious piece of Scallyrock from Liverpool and conjures up many memories of some of my favourite ever bands – Teardrop Explodes, Echo and the Bunnymen, The Coral and the spectacularly under-rated and undervalued Space.
A-Side Emilia is just a glorious cacophony of ragged guitar, a supercool echo enhanced vocal, sharp as a tack lyrics and the rockingest cello you will ever hear; all enhanced by a pop-melody that Mickey Most would have been proud of.
The B-Side Giving It Up; is two and a half minutes of NY flavoured Psych-Pop that will sound just as amazing played LOUD in a fast car on a sunny day or when blasted through a set of Marshall speakers at a festival.
I’m old enough to remember this type of music when it was the Sound of the Seventies, then later on during the late eighties and early nineties and hopefully the time is right for a resurgence of Rocky music with a melody and a chorus…..why not?
